Climate Policy and Carbon Markets – Ethical dilemmas in the field of Natural Climate Solutions and Voluntary Carbon Markets

This paper addresses the aspect of corporate net zero pathways that concerns the generation of negative emissions and their embedding into a corporation’s carbon accounting. The focus lies on analyzing potential dilemma situations with respect to the purchase of negative emissions generated by natural carbon sinks on the respective Voluntary Carbon Market. The paper features a case study concerning the net zero commitment of Triodos Bank. The paper presents an approach to dilemmas stressing that Triodos Bank faces an actual dilemma situation. Starting from this perspective, two areas are developed that could contribute to a change in the situation. On the one hand, the further development of regulatory and voluntary cross-market standards and, on the other hand, an examination of the question of what kind of organization the bank wants to be.
